Mis-en-Scene
03:00Mis-en-Scene describes the stuff in the frame and the way it is shown and arranged. We have organized this page according to four general areas: setting, lighting, costume and staging.
Setting- creates both a sense of place and a mood and it may also reflect a character’s emotional state of mind. It can be entirely filmed within a studio – or any location linking with the plot of the film e.g a park, a school or even a cafe.
Lighting- is basically the way the setting is lit. This could be natural light from the sun or artificial lighting. Artificial lighting can be controlled in it's position and intensity. For example, you can use a light to back light a character or even to create harsh shadows on the face of the actor. Light can also be used to make the scene look as un-artificial as possible by lighting it to mimic natural light if natural light is not available at that moment or to even create a harsh light to mirror an uncomfortable environment.
Props- these are the objects in the frame that may or may not come into contact with the actor. These should be relevant to the setting/plot. for example, a mobile phone can be used as a prop to tie in with the storyline.
Costume- pretty self explanatory, whatever the pro/antagonist is wearing could represent the situation or character of the actor. This must be relevant to the situation.
